Project Background

The information base

The episodes are based on scientific and journalistic sources. A central scientific source for the conceptual design of the consequences was a study carried out at the Chair of Ergonomics TU Berlin last year (Kiossis et. Al. 2020). In the context of this study, six people with visual impairment were accompanied throughout their work day and then interviewed. This method enabled insights into the challenges and obstacles knowledge workers with visual impairments encounter in their everyday work, but also which helpful solution strategies they have developed for themselves.

Journalistic sources were systematically researched and in particular the issue of the DBSV (German Association for people with visual impairment) magazine “Sichtweisen” on participation in the first labour market (04/20) was chosen as the starting point. The research was rounded off by an interview with Franziska Sgoff about her everyday work, which was partly integrated directly into one of the episodes.

Implementation in the Corona online semester:

Due to the pandemic, the entire project was realized digitally and virtually. In weekly online-meetings the project was discussed and ideas exchanged and submissions were submitted on fixed dates, from the first content concept to the final project report. When the storyboards for the episodes were set, the only "real" face to face contact happened for the recording of the episodes. Editing tasks of the episodes were then distributed again virtually, and even during a few long nights before the final audio files were handed in, the student team motivated each other with discord chats. After a processing time of 12 weeks, the result was ready.


With the project we pursued four objectives: We wanted to...

  • ...tread new, digital ways of science communication, as the current pandemic situation caused by the coronavirus in particular underlines the importance of appropriate formats for knowledge transfer and generation
  • ...consciously make ergonomic study results accessible as audio format.
  • ...ensure sustainable visibility of the topic, as the podcasts can be easily published and integrated into the teaching of ergonomics and media informatics.
  • ... move the development of barrier-free technology through insights into the everyday work of people with visual impairment into the focus of the digitization debate.

The result: knowledge transfer with a difference

The media informatics students implemented the content creatively and with great commitment. The results are three podcast episodes produced by, with and for young people. The consequences are intended to stimulate other students of technology courses to deal with the (otherwise hardly noticed) topic of participation in the world of work and to develop a more inclusive perspective as designers of the technology of the future. In addition, the initiators of the project would like to show a way for the media processing of such a topic, which brings together current research findings and journalistic contributions in an empathic manner and with a stringent focus on the perspective of people with visual impairment in everyday work.
